Shaily's innovation team set out with a clear goal: to engineer an injection pen that’s simple, reliable, and robust. Thus, Protean emerged - a testament to our commitment pioneering devices that streamlines user-experience without compromising on reliability.

Fast becoming one of Shaily’s most successful platforms, our 12-cavity tooling offers exponential production volumes to clients. Its implementation signifies our dedication to delivering not just quality, but also quantity - ensuring that Protean isn't merely a breakthrough in design but a game-changer in manufacturing as well.

The project gained momentum when a pharmaceutical client interested in a three-dose injector pen joined forces. Building such platforms is complex due to strict patent protection, but our innovations team recognised an opportunity as patents for certain mechanisms in an existing device were nearing expiration. This presented a chance to design a new platform and establish our own intellectual property.

Protean offers wide adaptability, accommodating single, three-dose, and 60-unit variants (both disposable and reusable) for dispensing medications such as Abaloparatide, Liraglutide, and Insulin Glargine. All being achieved with a consistent internal core mechanism.

As multiple patents remained active for the previous injector platform, the team concentrated on improving internal design features to avoid any infringement concerns. This involved looking at every small detail to look for potential improvements, right down to intricate component connection methods.

Our engineers make safety and accuracy a top priority. From this, they devised a unique 'last dose lockout' mechanism, guaranteeing that no further medication can be released if any drug remained after the final dose was given. To increase our IP further, our team even devised a new assembly method that could be patented which streamlined our manufacturing capabilities.

Protean has an entirely plastic design, meticulously crafted using top-tier, high-performance bio-compatible plastics sourced from industry leaders such as DuPont, Celanese, and Borealis. Each plastic underwent rigorous trials and scrutiny, selected for its exceptional dimensional stability to seamlessly integrate with the device's precise tolerances. In addition, we closely collaborated with our pharmaceutical partners, providing expertise in defining cartridge specifications, guiding on materials, design intricacies, and optimal assembly processes for the devices.
